I took an intensive mosaic class at the Creative Art Alliance on Saturday.
The class was led by local artist Rick Shelley.
His work is amazing.
He created this beautiful map mosaic for the Walters Art Museum.
Mosaics are my new favorite art-form to create.
Cutting and breaking glass is quite therapeutic.
Arranging the pieces is like doing a puzzle,
without any wrong answers.
Part of me regretted spending the day indoors
—Saturday was a gorgeous day—
but seeing my finished mosaic sparkle made it all worthwhile.

I ordered glass cutting tools online last night.
My next project will be to mosaic the raised flower bed Jack and I built in spring.
I need a lot of practice before I can start my big mosaic project next year.
It's all part of my plan to beautify my little corner of Baltimore.

ReplyDeleteThanks for your comments everyone!
ReplyDeleteI am really happy with the way my first mosaic project turned out--can't wait to get started on the next one. I am thinking a red-copper-gold dragon mosaic would be nice on the flower bed, but I have some other ideas too.....
oh neat! your description of breaking glass being therapeutic and arranging pieces being like a puzzle sounds appealing to me, i'm going to check out how to make some myself...love yours!
ReplyDeleteYour mosaic is beautiful! Definitely worth being indoors. Cutting glass and putting it back together anyway you want sounds so appealing. And that map moasic? Amazing!
ReplyDeleteThats interesting....nothing like an art and it's expressions.
ReplyDeleteIt's beautimous! Lovely piece.
ReplyDeleteHi there.Found you from Wednesday Spahgetti.
ReplyDeleteThis is fab!!
Wow, that's an amazing piece of art. The way ti sparkles at the top but is mute at the bottom ... reminds me of sunset when the moon is just about to peak out. I found you through Fab Brunette, I'll definitely keep on reading here!
ReplyDeleteI love mosaic! SO very Philly, lol. My in laws and I did a huge mosaic project together one Christmas holiday a few years back...it was a big bench, about 3feetX6feet. Everyone in the family (10 of us) took a area. It turned out wonderful. My inlaws keep in the back yard by their pool, it is always talked about whenever there are people over. I know that it is going to be treasured always by the whole family. I can't wait to see the BIG project your making. What a great idea.
ReplyDeleteShansPLC and Lizzi -- I definitely encourage you try mosaic making. It's really enjoyable, and the tools aren't nearly as frightening as you might think. No sharp instruments or power tools required!
ReplyDeleteModernMom and Nikolett -- Thanks for stopping by my blog! I hope you keep reading and keep commenting!
